Course Offerings/2009 Curriculum
You may choose only ONE of the following four courses to register your student(s) into the science program. These courses will occur on the first three weekends of the program. The fourth weekend will be the Student Conference described below. That conference is open to all program participants.
Engineering Workshops
These workshops will give the students an overview of some of the most exciting engineering fields hired at Sandia National Labs. Have you wondered what a mechanical or electrical engineer does? Is a computer scientist really a scientist? Learn about each of these fields through hands-on-workshops taught by Sandia employees.
(Grades 6-12)
JA NEFE Financial Planning Program
This program is designed to help students understand and make wise financial decisions. Students will examine the role money plays in achieving lifelong personal goals, make informed financial decisions, and learn how to avoid financial pitfalls. (Grades 6-12)
Math Workshops
If math is intimidating, or even if it's not, this class is for you. This class will teach you some tips and tricks to tame those math problems such as; “The 10-Step Approach to Solving Math Word Problems” or “Teaching Math as a Second Language” and more. (Grades 6 - 12)
Renewable Energy
Learn about current renewable energy technologies that are available for American Indian tribes to develop their natural resources. With experiments, hands-on lessons and interactions with renewable energy researchers will help you learn about these environmentally clean technologies. (Grades 6-12)
New! Student Conference
New this year, the DCSP will include a Student Conference on the last day of the program. This conference is in addition to the four courses listed above. The conference will include various organizations that will assist students in making informed choices about attending college after high school, by providing a variety of resources and information (e.g. AISES, AIGC, etc.). Also, come and see several demonstrations from scientists and engineers covering several topics like solar cooking, robotics and more. Students will have an opportunity to meet mentors and learn about engineering, science, and other interesting fields!
